Tips for Travelling Passengers

Travelling through Malta International Airport over the coming weeks?

As the summer travel rush sets in, the terminal is well and truly bustling with activity. While our team members will do our utmost to assist you while you’re travelling through our airport, here are a few travel tips on how you can prepare for a smooth journey ahead of your travels.

1. PLAN YOUR JOURNEY

Departing passengers are advised to arrive at the airport not more than 2 hours before their flight’s scheduled time of departure. Check our traffic pattern guidance for the summer months to get a better indication of how busy our terminal will be on your day and time of travel:

2. BOOK SPECIAL ASSISTANCE IF REQUIRED

Journey Facilitation Services

For families of children with autism and individuals on the spectrum, Malta International Airport offers a special journey facilitation service, which must be booked at least 72 hours prior to departure to enable our team to make any necessary arrangements to assist you. To book the service, kindly complete the form available here.

Services for Passengers with Reduced Mobility

If you, or someone you are travelling with, has limited mobility and requires special assistance during your journey through the airport, our trained staff will be on hand to make your arrival or departure from Malta as seamless and as comfortable as possible. You can book a special assistance service through your airline carrier at least 48 hours prior to departure.

All airline contact details may be found here.

More information about airport call points is available here.

3. BE PREPARED FOR TRAVEL WITH YOUNG CHILDREN

Airport Facilities

Should you need baby-changing facilities, all the airport’s spacious washrooms are equipped with fold-down changing tables.

A parental room is also available inside the Check-In Hall next to the Customer Service Information Centre. It is equipped with a comfortable sofa for feeding time, a nappy changer, a wash basin, and a drinking water station with a reverse osmosis system and temperature regulator.

Another changing room is located at Departures.

Checking In

If you’re travelling with a stroller, it will be tagged when you check in for your flight and can be kept until you arrive at the gates. Prior to boarding, you will be requested to close the stroller and hand it over to the ground handling staff for them to load on the aircraft.

Upon arrival, passengers can either pick up the stroller at disembarkation stage, if airline procedures allow this, or at the baggage reclaim area.

Passing through security

Baby foods and milk can be carried in your hand luggage in quantities that are sufficient for the trip. You might be asked to demonstrate that what you are carrying is actually fit for consumption, by tasting the food.

Passports & other documents
No matter how young, children still need a passport to travel.

If you are travelling with a child and you are not the child’s parent, or may appear not to be the parent (for example, if you have a different surname), you might be asked some questions to establish your relationship with the child. It may help if you could carry evidence of your relationship with the child and/or the reason why you are travelling with the child.

4. CHECK IN FOR YOUR FLIGHT ONLINE

The Check-In Hall is typically one of the busiest touchpoints at the airport, and queues can be expected during times of high to very high occupancy. To facilitate your journey, check in for your flight online and skip the queues.

If you are travelling with any of the airlines listed below, you can also make use of the self check-in kiosks inside the Check-In Hall, just by the Information Desk.

5. BREEZE THROUGH SECURITY

In line with the latest EU directive in relation to liquids carried in hand luggage, kindly be informed that passengers travelling through Malta International Airport are not allowed to carry liquid containers exceeding 100ml.

All containers and bottles, not exceeding the 100ml limit, are to be placed in a 1 litre transparent re-sealable bag (approximate bag size of 19 x 19 cm) and must be placed into a separate tray for screening. Passengers who are directed to pass their baggage through the new CT scanner will be allowed to leave their liquids, each not exceeding the 100ml limit, as well as any electronics, inside their baggage.

Before passing through the security scanners, please empty your pockets and remove your belt and jewellery before you are asked to do so, as this helps make the screening process smoother and faster.

Any medication should be accompanied by documentary proof of authenticity, such as a letter or prescription from a medical practitioner confirming that you need the medication for your trip. Liquid medication not needed during your flight should be transported in hold baggage.

Once you’ve completed the screening process, gather your items in the designated repacking areas to avoid holding up fellow passengers.
