FROM JFK TO MLA: DELTA AIR LINES’ INAUGURAL FLIGHT TOUCHES DOWN IN MALTA

Malta’s growing appeal among American travellers reached a new milestone today, as Delta Air Lines launched the first-ever services between John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York and Malta International Airport operated by a United States carrier.

The inaugural flight touched down at Malta International Airport at 8.12am, carrying around 200 passengers on board. Following a ceremonial ribbon-cutting by representatives from Delta Air Lines, Malta International Airport and industry stakeholders, passengers disembarked to a distinctly Maltese welcome, receiving locally inspired treats and commemorative keepsakes marking the launch of this landmark service between New York and Malta.

Speaking during a press conference held later in the day, Malta International Airport CEO Alan Borg described the launch as an important milestone for the island’s global connectivity, and a testament to the growing potential of the American market for Malta.

“Last year, American visitors were our highest-spending tourists, with the number of arrivals from the United States increasing by 47 per cent compared with 2023. These statistics show that Delta Air Lines is not taking a leap into the unknown but responding to a growing demand for travel to Malta among Americans. It is now crucial that stakeholders across the entire tourism value chain recognise and embrace their responsibility in ensuring that the Malta-New York service is successful.”

“Our new nonstop service between New York‑JFK and Malta opens the door for U.S. travelers to experience a destination where thousands of years of history meet Mediterranean lifestyle. From UNESCO‑listed cities and ancient archaeological sites to luxury seaside resorts, yachting harbours, crystal‑clear waters and a vibrant culinary scene, Malta delivers a sophisticated yet deeply authentic experience.

“Launching this route also strengthens ties between Malta and the United States, giving customers travelling from the archipelago seamless access to New York and convenient onward connections across Delta’s North American network,” said Ilse Janssens, Delta’s General Manager for Sales in Europe.

Prime Minister Robert Abela welcomed the launch of Delta Air Lines’ new direct service between Malta and New York, describing it as a direct bridge for visitors, businesses, investors, students and families. 

Dr Abela said the service presents an opportunity to strengthen economic ties between Malta and the United States, while helping diversify visitor markets, attract higher-value tourism, facilitate investment, and encourage business partnerships. He thanked Delta Air Lines for its confidence in Malta and expressed commitment to a lasting partnership.

Operating three times weekly throughout the summer season until October, the non-stop flight will depart from Malta on Mondays, Thursdays, and Saturdays, providing travellers with a direct connection to one of the world’s leading airport hubs.
