MIA Welcomes 4.5 Millionth Passenger After Unprecedented 4-year Growth
Malta International Airport today welcomed its 4,500,000th passenger this year, marking another milestone in the airport’s history, as annual traffic keeps growing to unprecedented levels.
Annual traffic is now 1 million passengers more than it was in 2011, a growth of more than 25%, with traffic of the last four years having risen greater than passenger movements of the previous 10 years combined.
“This exceptional growth is a result of the close cooperation among major stakeholders and the tireless efforts being made by everybody in the aviation and tourism industries to keep building on our success. While these numbers already leave a substantial impact on the local economy, they also inspire us to keep investing in our airport and our people, to continue to consistently delight our guests,” said MIA CEO Alan Borg.
Responding to this year’s achievements, MTA CEO Paul Bugeja noted that Malta’s performance had once again been towards the top of global and regional averages. “The MTA works hand in hand with MIA and other stakeholders with a view to improving Malta’s air connectivity by attracting and working with a diversity of airlines serving different routes over the twelve months of the year,” he added.
The Minister for Tourism Dr Edward Zammit Lewis also welcomed the arrival of the 4.5 millionth passenger at the Malta International Airport with satisfaction, remarking that the overall prospects and outlook for the tourism industry remained very positive and encouraging. Minister Zammit Lewis thanked all stakeholders particularly Mr Alan Borg and MIA, and said this sector was a prime example of the very positive achievements that could be attained when all stakeholders, together with Government, were aligned in the same direction.
A gift was presented to Michael Nunn and his wife Ria from The Netherlands, on behalf of Malta International Airport, in the presence of Malta Tourism Authority CEO, Paul Bugeja. It is the 14th time Mr & Mrs Nunn are visiting Malta this Christmas.
