Maltese football team wins European championship title

Amid the World Cup hype, the Malta Airport football team clinched its very own prestigious football title in the eighteenth edition of the European Airports Football Championship (EAFC).

The team, which brings together players representing different aviation stakeholders including Malta International Airport, Air Malta, Aviaserve, and AFM employees, went undefeated for eight matches played over the course of three days in Dublin, Ireland.

After beating teams such as Nice Airport, London City Airport, and Dublin Airport, the MLA football team faced Moscow Sheremetyevo in a final encounter, netting its winning goal merely minutes before the final whistle was sounded and going on to take home the Don Treacy Cup.

MLA CEO Alan Borg congratulated the team upon its victory and went on to say: “This proves that teamwork always kits out a group of people with the right gloves to punch above their weight and achieve great results together. It was a pleasure to watch the team face worthy opponents with a true Maltese can-do attitude, and play their way to winning the cup.”

This year’s edition was hosted by Dublin Airport and saw 14 airport teams play for the Don Treacy Cup between 15 and 17 June. The anticipated biyearly tournament is open to Airports Council International accredited airports throughout Europe.
