Portable devices containing lithium batteries such as the Airwheel, Solowheel, Hoverboard, Mini-Segway, Balance Wheel and others do fall under the provisions of the Dangerous Goods Regulations as recently announced by the International Air Transport Association (IATA). These popular devices are not considered as mobility aids but are categorised under ‘portable electronic devices’, which may be subject to restrictions.

Different airlines have varying policies regarding passengers attempting to board with a device powered by lithium batteries and may not be permitted to carry them onto the plane. Passengers intending to travel with these or similar devices are advised to ask airline representatives whether or not the device is allowed on-board the aircraft. Several airlines operating from Malta International Airport have introduced limitations on the carriage of lithium battery powered devices, so it’s best that passengers inform themselves ahead of time to avoid disappointment.

Passengers travelling on flights for which limitations have been imposed will be withheld from carrying lithium battery powered devices in either checked-in or carry-on baggage.
