Seabed Clean-Ups

Since 2020, the Malta Airport Foundation has been collaborating with two local subaqua clubs, Atlam and Calypso, on annual seabed clean-ups in carefully selected underwater spots in need of a clean-up, due to the accumulation of improperly disposed of waste, from car tyres and ceramic toilets to marine engines and broken boat parts. These fruitful collaborations have resulted in the islands’ seabed being cleared of a total of 10 tonnes of marine waste since the start of this underwater initiative.

In fact, the teams involved collected 1.6 tonnes of waste from Birżebbuġa and Wied iż-Żurrieq in the first year, 1.8 tonnes from Marsaxlokk and Marsalforn in 2021, 3.6 tonnes of from Senglea and Tigné in 2022, and over 3 tonnes from Birgu and St Paul’s Bay in
2023.
