Environmental Sustainability
- Since 2015, the company has been on a sustainability journey, beginning with its first GRI Sustainability report
- MIA has been part of the Airport Carbon Accreditation Programme since 2016, and in 2024, it progressed to Level 3 ‘Optimisation’, having satisfied the additional requirements related to the measurement of its Scope 3 emissions carbon footprint.
- Committed to become a Net Zero carbon airport by 2050. This is outlined in our Net Zero Carbon Plan, with two main interim targets set:
- Reaching carbon neutral status in 2025, and;
- Reducing its emissions by 65% by 2030 when compared to 2015 (baseline year).
- Launched a Stakeholder Engagement initiative in 2023 to enhance environmental collaboration and streamline Scope 3 data collection with airport operators, including airlines, ground handlers, employees, and outlet operators.
- For 2024, while passenger traffic grew by nearly 15% over the previous year to total 8.96 million movements, the Company’s electricity consumption increased by 8%.
- 4 PV systems throughout the airport campus, with plans to expand our PV capacity by introducing a 5th PV farm at airfield. This installation is expected to generate c. 5.1mln kWh of clean energy. Equivalent to c.50% of our 2024 electricity consumption.
- An expected 0.11 kg rate of landfill waste per passenger for 2024 – a company KPI since 2022.
- Plans are underway for Apron 8 South reservoir – this shall be the largest reservoir constructed to date, with a total capacity of 10,000 m3 and will help the company reduce dependency on bowser water once completed.
- Home to 2 apiaries at airfield side, currently having 16 colonies – equivalent to c.750,000 bees. Honey produced is used to test Air Quality at the airport. Moreover, an Air Quality Monitoring System has been installed with data collection planned to start in 2025.
